Mission Statement: To preserve an historic 1730 house and provide a permanent home for an eclectic range of artifacts, books and documents of historical interest.
The St. George’s Historical Society was formed in 1920 with the express purpose of saving Mitchell House, which was about to be put up for auction.
The Society acquired the property in 1922 and has been at home here ever since, thus ensuring the entwined destiny of one of Bermuda’s significant historic buildings and its most unique organizations.
The St. George’s Historial Society opened a museum soon after settling in Mitchell House. Initially there was a small lending library in association with the Furness, Withy Co., operators of early cruise ships to the island. Before closing down fifty years later, the library had collected over 2,000 volumes and many valuable 18th and 19th century documents!
History.
The first exhibitions comprised loans from Bermudians of all walks of life. Gradually loans became permanent, establishing what has become an eclectic collection that ranges from the mundane to the significant—from kitchen utensils to a 17th century Bermuda cedar table used at the State House when St. George’s was the island’s capital.

Today the museum’s special mission is to bring to life the history of St. George’s, still a “living town” and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, after four plus centuries.
